Katsutoshi Kuroda

Katsutoshi Kuroda

Katsutoshi Kuroda (born 1981) joined the art club at Nishi-Awaji House of Hope (Higashi-Yodogawa, Osaka) in around 2011, and makes artworks for two hours, three times a month. He also work at home, whenever he finds time, he gets absorbed into making works with found paper and pens.
Kuroda always draws battle stories set in the Warring State period or in contemporary society, his themes includes “the destruction of Earth” and “the fall of humankind”. He uses the frame-divided format, reminiscent of manga comics, and fills the frames with unknown creatures and humans squirming, bleeding and being blown up. According to Kuroda, he has been making drawings since he was three years old, but details of the contents are hard to decipher due to his fast and quirky drawing style. His way of drawing is unique; he draws from the end of the story, drawing backwards in time, towards the start. With drawing paper, he starts from the bottom and works to the top. With a longer series work, he starts drawing from the last part.
The fact that he presupposes a miserable ending and draws the story from the end to the beginning has a strong power, making the viewers think about the meaning of it all.
